ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡なら、名前は知ってる。
アレシボ天文台が、設備の老朽化や維持管理費の増加に伴い
役目を終えるというニュースを見たのは最近だった。
その矢先に起きた崩壊事故。何とも言えない気持ちになったよ。

自分で悟っていたかのようだ。人類の発展と科学の進歩を見届けたように…。
オレは機械にだって “魂” があると思っている。
配達にも使う CUB だってそうだ。行き届いた整備と管理をすれば
期待に応える走りをしてくれる。部品が壊れれば不調をきたす。
寿命が来れば、動かなくなる。１つの法則みたいなものかな。
アレシボ天文台の崩壊は、それに当てはまるような気がしてならない。
でなければ、殆ど無関心のオレが気を惹く事などなかっただろう。
一部からは修復を望む声もあると聞く。気持ちは理解できる。
だがね、自ら “魂” の灯火を消した彼は、それを望むだろうか？
反射面を受け止めていた大地は、修復を期待しているだろうか？
そのまま元の自然に還るのを待っている気がしてならない。
宇宙にロマンや希望を託す人は多い。
ならば、それを求めたモノにも同じ感情を抱いても良いだろう。
去りゆく者を静かに見送るのも、時代の移り変わりじゃないかな。
