去年の10月31日だったな。
突然飛び込んできた衝撃的なニュース。
“首里城消失”

画像から推測するに、1000度を超えている業火。
あまりの高温で、熱中症になるほど懸命な消火活動をしていた署員。
手の施しようがない彼らの無念を思うと、いたたまれなかった。
鎮火後の焼け落ちた姿は、本当に無残。
『首里城跡』として、約30年に渡り復元工事を終えたのが去年1月。
完成した矢先の大惨事だった。
関係者は勿論、地元の方の落胆を思うと、やりきれない気持ちになる。
オレは沖縄に知人も友人もいない。訪れた事もない。
だがね…沖縄という地域が過去にどれだけ辛く悲しい思いをしてきたかは
少なからず知っている。
首里城は沖縄のシンボルだ。過去にも3回消失している。
その度に多大な努力で復興してきた。
その絢爛たる姿は、画像で見ていても美しくて素晴らしい。
琉球王国の行事を再現している風景だろうか。
当然ながら、消失前の画像だ。
復興には、政府も支援を確約している。
一般の方々からも多額の寄付が集まったと聞く。
地方の自治体にも、支援の声があるとも…。
オレは首里城だけを特別扱いしている訳ではない。

熊本城もそうだし、何より災害で苦労している人が沢山みえる。
一部の心無い言動をする連中は別として、日本人は各地の復興を
心から願っている。行動している。
それを世界中の人が見守ってくれている。
東日本大震災の時、海外の人が投稿した SNS にこういう言葉があった。
“何があっても負けない日本人を、我々は知っている”
このメッセージを投稿してくれた人の思いは裏切れないって思ったよ。
あの時物凄く感動したのを、今でもよく覚えている。
不名誉だが、日本は災害王国だ。
過去の歴史を見ても、そんな記録が沢山残っている。
だが、負けなかった。壊滅的な被害の中から、立ち上がってきた。
今後も全国規模で発生する地震が懸念されている。
でもね、それでも負けないだろう。何度でも立ち上がる。
首里城の復興は、そんな日本人の心意気を感じさせる。
これは世界中の問題でもあるが、COVID-19 で苦闘している人も多い。
でも負けない。負けてほしくない。また立ち上がってほしい。
フランスのノートルダム大聖堂も然り。あれも衝撃的なニュースだった。
作業に使われていた鉄パイプが熱で変形している様子を見れば
この火災も凄まじい高温であった事は容易に判断できる。
収蔵品の多くが被害を免れたのが不幸中の幸い。
仏教徒のオレでも、大聖堂の早期復元がなされるのを願っている。
