落胆と涙と感激。

寒々しさを感じると思うが、それほど寒くはなかった。

毒蜘蛛２号のボディに変な物くっ付いてるが、これは温湿度計。

車中泊の際にチェックする為持参したんだ。

この時は１３℃。

オレの地元と季節が１ヵ月違う感覚。

C62 3 号機との再会は、実現しなかった。

上陸間もなく落胆したよ。

公開日が決められていて、何れにしても合わせれなかった。

悔しい思いをしながら俱知安へ向かった。

当時と風景が激変していて、探すのに手間取った。

再会できた79615号機は、哀れな姿になっていた。

オレはこの車輛の機関士を存じている。

初めて79615号機に会った時「窯に火を入れれば動くのでは？」

そう思う位輝いていた。レールは車輛分しかないのに…。

氏は、展示されている車輛を連日磨きに来ていると話してみえた。

ロッドに錆一つなかった。動輪も塗装されてなかった。

運転台もそのままで、欠落している部品なんて何一つなかった。

これは２９年前の話だ。

変わり果てた姿に涙。

暫し一緒に過ごし、現地を後にした。

また必ず訪れる約束をして。

美唄の風景は、記憶にあるものと大きく変わってなかったよ。

丁寧且つ情熱を加えた保護をされている多くの関係者に感謝。

旧駅舎も綺麗に保存されている。

２９年前は、完全に忘れ去られた状態で雑草に埋もれていたんだよ。

運転台には菓子の包装紙や雑誌が散乱し、見るに耐えなかった。

同行者と一緒に清掃したのを、よく覚えている。

今朝４時半に接舷して上陸。

早速目張りを外した。

先ずは３輌の蒸気機関車と “再会” を果たすべく、出発した。

これは、言うまでもなく血圧計。

会社の社長が社員の健康管理を促す為に、休憩室に設置したもの。

積み込みが１８時頃だと聞いたんでね。

近くの PA にトラック停めて、のんびりしてたんだ。

１３時に先方へ確認の連絡を入れたら準備出来ていた。

僅かしかない荷物を積み込み、即移動。

三重県の御在所 SA で、トラックの給油。

そこに何故か売っていた東北銘菓「ずんだ餅」を買った。

現在は浜松 SA にて休息中。

話を戻そう。

理由の２つめ。

社長はオレに気を遣い『仕事』で行かせようとしている。

業務で北海道へ行くなら、交通費は全額会社負担だ。

「引っ越しとかの仕事なら、あるんだけどなぁ…」

社長マジだった。（笑）

トラックで遊びに行く人なんて、聞いたことないよ。

どっちにしても、トラックはフェリーの予約間に合わない。

オレもキャンセル料が発生する。

何より！毒蜘蛛２号に乗って行かなければ意味がない。

連休中の仕事も調整してくれた。

オレが事前に申告しておいたのもあって、問題なかった。

余計なカネを使わせまいとする気持ちは素直に伝わってくる。

本当に良い社長だよ。せっかちに喋る癖はあるが。

「○○の名産品が食べたい」と思ったら、オレに行かせればいい。

そのエリア行きの荷物を手配すれば済むことだ。

安心して言ってくださいって話してたら、全員大爆笑。

全員の仕事を中断させてしまった。

フェリーの料金や船内の話など、盛り上がってた。

オレが入社した頃は、事務所内の空気が張り詰めていた。

４人はオレがどんな人物なのか分からなくて、接し方も苦労しただろう。

差し入れ持って行ったり、ドライバー以外の仕事したり。

（除雪、トラックの整備、取引先への対応等）

徐々に空気が変わっていくのは実感してた。

こうして皆が大笑いして、楽しい職場になればいい。

その為の努力は惜しまない。

皆が、こんなオレを応援してくれているから。

腰を痛めたドライバー。

「浪人さんの仕事増やして申し訳ないね」と言った。

この人は入社時にオレの教官した人。

以前もワクチン接種で体調崩し、オレが代わりにトラックを走らせた。

事務所の４人は、そういう事も全部知ってる。

オレは…受けた恩に対し、それを上回る感謝の気持ちで返す。

これだけは絶対曲げないポリシーだ。

身元がはっきりしないオレを、社長は雇ってくれた。

オレが自分で作成した誓約書には…

・私に前科はありません。

・免許証を失効した事は１度もありません。

という項目も加えたくらいだからね。

これからも愉快な人たちでいて欲しいよ。
